Artist biography

Gemma’s practice explores new forms of evidential image making and achieving justice through photography. As an experienced journalist, interviews and testimony often accompany her work, which is centred on social issues such as domestic abuse and post-natal mental illness.

Predominantly an analogue artist, her images often incorporate the use of hand-made objects such as masks. These artworks challenge perceptions of truth and reality. The role of the photograph as evidence is a key area of research and her current project is an investigation into analogue forensic photography and evidence book creation. It is supported by a grant from the Richard and Siobhan Coward Foundation.

Gemma was recently awarded an MA Photography with distinction from Falmouth University. Her final major project, a collaborative body of work that provides photographic evidence of Coercive Control, will be shown at Northampton Museum and Art Gallery in March 2025.
